Para la newsletter especial de Voluntarios OHL, hemos tenido el placer de entrevistar a Felipe Domecq, ganador del 2º Premio de la I Convocatoria de Proyectos Sociales del Grupo OHL y patrono de la Fundación Manolo Maestre Dávila.

For the OHL Volunteers Special newsletter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Felipe Domecq, winner of the second prize of the First Contest of Social Projects. 

La Fundación Manolo Maestre Dávila, presentó una propuesta consistente en becas universitarias para estudiantes universitarios en riesgo de exclusión de los barrios Polígono Sur y Tres Mil Viviendas de Sevilla o Cerro Amate y San Telmo de Jerez.

The Manolo Maestre Foundation, submitted a proposal for university grants for students at risk of social exclusion from the Poligono Sur and Tres Mil Viviendas in Seville or The Cerro Amate and San Telmo in Jerez 

¿Por qué decidiste presentar el proyecto de la Fundación Manolo Maestre Dávila a la I Convocatoria de Proyectos Sociales?

Colaboro con la Fundación Manolo Maestre Dávila desde que se fundó y llevamos ya varios años trabajando con Cáritas Universitaria en Sevilla. Sabíamos que Cáritas estaba en conversaciones con los trabajadores sociales del Polígono Sur y que necesitaban ayuda financiera para dar becas. Cuando ya llevaba unos meses en OHL me intresé por la labor solidaria de nuestra empresa. Y justo me encontré con que en breves sacarían esta convocatoria: blanco y en botella. ¡Tenía que presentar el proyecto FMMD-Cáritas!

Why did you decide to submit the Manolo Maestre Foundation projects to the First Contest of Social Projects?

We have been working with Manolo Maestre Foundation in Seville for the past several years. We knew that Caritas was in contact with The Polígono Sur social workers and that they need financial help to provide grants. A few months after I started working in OHL, I became interested in our Company Social Initiatives. Just then I found out that we would be opening this contest. Just what I was looking for! I had to present the FMMD-Cáritas project!

¿A cuántas personas se ha ayudado con el premio de la I Convocatoria de Proyectos Sociales? ¿En qué?

De manera estricta a 14 alumnos que han recibido 500 euros cada uno para pagar, en parte, la matrícula universitaria del curso. Pero está claro que lo importante no es solo estos 500 euros sino el mensaje que reciben estos alumnos, sus familias y todo el barrio (es el barrio más pobre o de los más pobres de España según todas las estadísticas). El mensaje es que CÁRITAS APUESTA POR ELLOS, POR SUS ESTUDIOS Y POR SU FUTURO.

How many people have been helped with the prize from the I Contest of Social Projects? How have they been help?

Strictly speaking, 14 students had received 500 euros each to partially pay the admissions fee for the university. It’s clear that aren’t really as important as the message these students, their families and their district receives. (It is one of the poorest districts of Spain, according to statistics)The message is that Caritas supports them, their studies and their future.

¿Animarías a tus compañeros a participar en la II Convocatoria de Proyectos Sociales?

Por supuesto que sí. La acción solidaria es lo más importante que podemos hacer cada uno de nosotros. Conocemos necesidades y ONGs que apoyan en muchas causas. OHL nos lo pone en bandeja, ¿cómo no echarles una mano a las ONG presentando sus proyectos?

Would you urge your coworkers to participate in the II Contest of Social Projects?

Of course I would. Social Action is the most important thing we can do. We are aware of the necessities and NGOs that provide support in many causes. OHL makes it easy. Why not help the NGOs submitting their projects?

¿Cuál es el objetivo de la Fundación Manolo Maestre Dávila?

Apoyamos proyectos solidarios liderados por ONGs ya existentes con financiación y voluntarios. La financiación, a su vez, la obtenemos de empresas como OHL y de eventos benéficos que organizamos: festivales culturales, campeonatos de golf, venta de muebles restaurados, etc. En la Fundación nos centramos en España porque queremos ayudar a quien está más cerca. Surgimos en recuerdo de Manolo que era una persona muy cercana.

What is the objective of the Manolo Maestre Dávila?

We support social projects lead by NGOs with financing and volunteers. At the same time, we obtain financing from companies as OHL and social events that we organize: cultural festivals, golf tournaments, sales of restored furniture, etc… In the Foundation we focus on Spain, because we want to help those who are near. We are founded of the memory of Manolo, who was a very close person.

¿Crees que benefician este tipo de acciones solidarias a la compañía? ¿Por qué?

Mucho. Porque a muchos de nosotros nos hace sentirnos más orgullosos de OHL. Y porque nos involucramos con otros compañeros dentro de OHL en algo más allá de nuestras funciones contractuales. Vamos más allá, recorremos la extra mile. Nos demuestra que dando un poco más de nosotros mismos, conseguimos cosas grandes. Y esto lo podemos extrapolar a otros muchos campos de colaboración en la compañía.

Do you think that these actions benefit the Company? Why?

Of course. It makes many of use prouder of OHL. Also we take part, along with other coworkers, in activities which are beyond our normal functions. We go further, we run the extra mile. It proves that giving a little bit more of ourselves, we achieve big things. We can extrapolate this to many other fields of collaboration in the company.

¿En qué mejorarías la Convocatoria de Proyectos Sociales?

Me ha parecido una convocatoria sensacional. Quizá fuese recomendable que los empleados que presentan proyectos tengan oportunidad de presentarse personalmente en una presentación física ante el jurado, para que éste tenga mejor conocimiento y pueda solucionar dudas. Es simplemente una recomendación. De todas maneras, ya este año nos llamaron para solucionar varias dudas con lo cual creo que el objetivo se cumple igualmente.

How would you improve the Contest of Social Projects?

I think it’s a sensational contest. Maybe it would be desirable for the employees that submit projects to have the opportunity to present personally the project before the jury, so they have a better knowledge of the project and any doubt can be resolved. Anyway, we have already been contacted, this year, to resolve various doubts, so that the objective is fulfilled equally.
